๐ŸŒWelcome๐ŸŒย

Alcohol. It’s the norm. It’s what we DO. ‘Going for a drink’ is what’s expected from our heavy drinking culture. But come on, let’s be honest, it was never just ‘a drink’. It was always more that that. Or, it was for me. So on 1 January 2017 when I declared to my partner (with a killer hangover!) that I was giving up the booze for 90 days, he laughed. ‘Yeah right’ was his response. He had zero confidence in me… I had zero confidence in myself. I was a drinker, a boozer, a wino, a typical Kiwi pisshead that didn’t always know when enough was enough.

I had a problem with alcohol.

But at the time, I was in denial. I was a typical functioning alcoholic – we always found a way to justify our drinking. It’s how many Kiwis grew up, it’s what Kiwis DID and STILL DO to celebrate, commiserate and / or chill. Simply because ‘it’s been a stressful day’ or it’s Friday is reason enough. You know the old line: ‘You’ve had a hard day, you deserve it’.

NoWineImFine is the story of my sobriety journey: my challenges, my triumphs and my sobriety toolkit.  Every week, just for you, I will explore a new sobriety podcast, book, or other tool that claims to support sobriety. And I’ll give you my honest feedback on these.

After a tonne of research, I’ve come up with a bunch of awesome tools that I’m really excited to share with you. If you’re curious about quitting drinking or simply cutting back, I hope you find power in some of the tools and tips that have helped me be successful.

Let’s ratchet this up to the next level!

With 74 days of sobriety under my belt, I’m loving life and having a ball. There were plenty of tough bits – let’s get those lessons learned on the table while we’re at it. Initially this was just a 90 day detox. But it’s been so profound that I’m going to ratchet my recovery up to the next level. And I’d love for you to be alongside me when it happens.

In addition to my journey being shared here, there is a true test comming … stay tuned!!! In a couple of months, it’ll be blogging my way to you from one of the alcohol capitals of the world. Yes!!! LAS VEGAS!!! My goal is to soberly survive a week long holiday in Sin City with some wonderful friends. But I’m under no delusions; these friends are drinkers. Alas! I am committed to this challenge. I am going to have a kickass, killer, SOBER holiday in Las Vegas.

They say it can’t be done…

Everyone has said it’s impossible. Vegas without booze is like night without day. Like salt without pepper… or is it?!? Let’s see… I’m absolutely petrified at the prospect. My life revolved around wine up until 74 days ago.

So come along. Join me. Share in the tools I’ll be presenting each week. And I’ll be blogging my way to you from Vegas. You are my virtual accountability partners and I am committed to showing you and everyone who doubts me that it IS possible to do Vegas and have a rip roaring time without drinking!

Finally, I’d love to get your feedback and tips along the way, we can do this.

Viva Las Vegas baby!!!!

    • Thank you so much! As the weeks go by, I think it’s getting easier to be at an event where friends are drinking. I love Vegas too… but never been there sober – it’ll be a true test!!!

  1. This is such a pro-active way to support yourself, and others. Reading back over the highs and lows can help to find triggers and avoid them, whilst showing that “It” doesn’t have to be a part of your life and in turn, affect the lives of those you love.

    • Absolutely! Reflecting on the lessons learned via this blog will, I hope, help others. ‘It’ can be a slippery slope’… I love how the the following quote from a welll known author sums this up.
“‘First you take a drink, then the drink takes a drink, then the drink takes you.” – F. Scott Fitzgerald
