Yesterday (Sunday) a friend and I went on a gut busting, glorious hike that would have been out of the question before I quit drinking. We both joked how neither of us would have dreamt of meeting at 8am on a Sunday morning to climb hills. We would have both been hung over from a pathetic Saturday night drinking session … then waste Sunday, moping about, eating junk food and feeling sorry for ourselves. Remember those mornings, waking up hungover, with dreaded recollections from the night before: ‘What did I say?’ or ‘I hope I didn’t offend anyone!’
No thanks! Not me anymore! These days I wake up with a clear conscience and healthy mind.
So we met at 8am as the sun started to rise across the Cook Straight (that’s the body of water between the North and South Islands in my photos). We explored some tracks I’d never been on before and suffice to say, the views were breath taking. The warm gentle winds comming off the ocean were extraordinary. And being able to see the planes comming past us, to come into land was fun too.
We got home about 2 1/2 hours later but wow how the time flew. We chatted the whole time and had a blast.
Nature is so invigorating. What better way to spend Sunday morning.
Happy weekend everyone, I’ll leave you with some pictures from the peak. The Sound of Music springs to mind!!! πΆ
When I was drinking I’d often be walking home from God knows where or in a cab at 7 or 8 am. I HATED the people I would see out for a run or a walk. They made my reality hurt just a little bit more. But really i know now–i didn’t hate them–i just longed to be like them–to have the life in me to be active and happy and alive at that time of day! I feel very lucky that I am one of those people now, love the mornings! Great post, happy for you, and gorg pics!
